Felix Martinez, a19 year-old former North Atlanta Soccer player (2005-2007), recently went to the doctor because he was having blurry vision. What the doctor found was that his blood pressure was extremely high and he recommended that Felix go to the hospital immediately. Further tests found that Felix's kidneys were not functioning and that he would've been in danger of losing his life if they had found out about his condition any later.
The doctors have determined that Felix will need a kidney transplant. One of his sisters is going to donate one of her kidneys, but the cost to have such an operation could cost up to $150,000. The family did not have insurance at the time Felix was hospitalized, so they have already amassed some pretty substantial medical bills. In the last few days, Felix's mother was able to purchase insurance that will take care of some of the costs, but the insurance stipulates that he must wait at least seven months before they will cover some of the costs of the operation. During the next seven months, Felix will have to have dialysis 2-3 times a week because his kidneys are no longer functioning.
Some former and current players at North Atlanta have been raising money to help Felix defray some of the enormous expenses that the Martinez family are facing. The medicines alone that Felix must take are $500-700 a month. Mr. MyGrant, North Atlanta's Principal, has allowed for some of the students to collect donations. In addition, some of the proceeds from the Valentine's Day School Dance went towards Felix's medical bills.
