Felix Martinez, Class of 2007 and one of our former North Atlanta Soccer stars (2005-2007), went to the doctor in January, 2009 because he was having blurry vision. What the doctor found was that his blood pressure was extremely high and he recommended that Felix go to the hospital immediately. Further tests found that Felix's kidneys were not functioning and that if he had waited any longer, he could have been in danger of losing his life. The doctors determined that Felix will need a kidney transplant. Several of Felix's family members, including his younger sister, have stepped up to possibly donate one of their kidneys. Despite having possible donors lined up, the process is long and Felix must wait until around December, 2010 to finally have the transplant. Until that time, Felix will have to have dialysis twice a week because his kidneys are no longer functioning. 

While the family's insurance plan is taking care of some of the costs, the family has already amassed some pretty substantial medical bills. The cost to have such an operation could cost up to $150,000. Some former and current players at North Atlanta have been raising money to help Felix defray some of the enormous expenses that the Martinez family are facing. The medicines alone that Felix must take are $500-700 a month. Mr. MyGrant, North Atlanta's Principal,  allowed for some of the students to collect donations during the 2008-2009 school year. Some of the proceeds from the 2009 Valentine's Day School Dance went towards Felix's medical bills. The North Atlanta Booster Club was also able to raise money through various charitable events. Many people from the North Atlanta community have stepped up to help out one of their own.
